Book Giveaway!

Spread the word - Emmy's giving a book away!

Just add a comment to this post about a book that you remember from your childhood. Your name will be put into a hat with all the other entries and a name will be pulled out by Emmy herself.

I've been asked to keep the book a secret, but Emmy wants you to know that it will be one of her favorite Thanksgiving books and included with the book will be a poem, recipe and craft project.

The drawing will be the afternoon of November 12th.
The winner will be notified by email and announced on Emmy's Book of the Day.

Best of luck!

  1. How cool?!
My favorite book as a kid was the Rainbow Goblins. I remember when my Mom got it for me. I thought it was the most beautiful book in the world. My Mom wrote the sweetest inscription in it, too.
My favorite book from my babies' infancies was Jamberry. I love the pictures and it is SO fun to read!
Love to Emmy and her mama.

  2. Yeah! What a great idea. So many books to choose from, but I think The Giving Tree has got to be one of the best.

  3. OK, I'm bending the rules just a bit. Laurellai and I recently discovered a great book called Bee-Bim Bop. Its a cute rhyming story about cooking Koren Bee-Bim Bop (mix-mix rice). It has such a jingle that she already knows all the words. We're going to give the recipe a try this week and see how it goes!

  4. Hi Sara - Thank you for sharing your favorite books! Rainbow Goblins has such beautiful illustrations! Emmy also enjoyed Jamberry. "One berry. Two berry. Pick me a blueberry."

  5. Hi Heather - The Giving Tree is a wonderful book. Wasn't Shel Silverstein brilliant! Here is a link to an animated version of the story with music and narration by Silverstein.

  7. I loved Winnie the Pooh. I even named our dog "Pooh" after it. Poor thing.

  8. Hi Tina - I LOVE Winnie the Pooh stories. When I taught second grade, we celebrated A.A. Milne's birthday every January. Children came dressed as their favorite character and we spent the day "exploring" The Hundred Acre Wood.

  9. Being from the mmmm, an older generation, my favorite books that I read as an elementary student were Nancy Drew books! Oh I thought she was awesome! :>)

  10. Hi Dottie - Nancy Drew books were the best when I was growing up as well. So smart and independent! I saw a little girl dressed as Nancy Drew for Halloween. She only knew her through the Nancy Drew movie and not the books, but I hope I encouraged her to check one of the books out of the library!

  11. Oh, how do we choose! My favorite book from childhood was The Night Before Christmas (various versions!!!). I can remember beginning to read it around September and I could usually convince my parents that it was reasonable to read it until at least the end of January:) Still love it.
My kids' favorite book has always been first and foremost Goodnight Moon. They of course have many faves, but it will always be their favorite and has the most memories attached:)

P.S. BiBimBop is fabulous!!! Try it hot with a raw egg that cooks when mixed in with the hot rice and veggies... SOOOO good. Also, you NEED Gochuchong (red pepper paste)-it makes the dish. Good luck.

  12. Hi Jamie - The Night Before Christmas is a CLASSIC! It's definitely part of our Christmas Eve tradition. There are so many wonderful versions, but I am partial to Jan Brett's illustrations. Thank you for the advice on the BiBimBop. It sounds delicious.

  13. So many thousands of books for me to choose from! I read every Nancy Drew book along with my sister and best friends. Oh, to have a roadster, but I did have a handsome father who was a lawyer. My vote has to be having Treasure Island read to us by our older sister, a chapter per night.

My favorite current picture book is Peter Reynolds' The Dot. It is a great message for all of us.

  14. Hi Kyle - Ah yes, Treasure Island - such adventure! What a wonderful memory you hold of your sister reading aloud to you. Reading aloud is one of the most important things you can do for children. It instills a love for books that continues throughout their lifetime. I also LOVE The Dot. Peter Reynolds is a treasure to children's literature. Here is my post about the book: http://emmysbookoftheday.blogspot.com/2009/05/dot.html

  15. Hi Emerson!!
I loved Dr. Seuss books growing up. But after spending so much time with Emmy, she helped me fall in love with so many other books! I love Papa, Please Get the Moon for Me because it reminds me of the bond between father and daughter. It was one of the first books I bought (for Matt)when I got pregnant.

  16. Hi Krissy - Dr. Seuss is an icon! "I would not eat them here or there.
I would not eat them anywhere. I would not eat green eggs and ham.
I do not like them, Sam-I-am." I'm glad that Emmy was able to introduce you to so many children's books. Papa, Please Get the Moon for Me is a wonderful book and one of our favorites also. We love Eric Carle's illustrations!

  17. Just an update . . . the Bee-Bim Bop was AWESOME!! Laurellai's attention span didn't make it through much of the cooking, but she thought it was wildly funny to Mix it . . . mix like CRAZY" just like the character when it was time to eat! I think we might do a little workshop on Bee-bim Bop, its just so fun to say! A link to your blog is going up today :)

  18. Hi Chrissy - Thank you for the update on the Bee-Bim Bop! I can just imagine Laurellai mixing like crazy! And thank you for including a link to this blog on your website. I love teaching at Play Makers and Emmy loves playing and learning there. We're so lucky to have found you. http://www.playmakersfamily.com/

  19. I always loved Tikki tikki tembo.... I still remember my librarian reading it to me ~25 years ago... I read it to my 1 year old son Liam but had to shorten it because his attention span isn't long enough to listen to that long name yet :)

  20. Hi Rachel - Thank you for reminding me of Tikki Tikki Tembo. What a fun book! I will have to share it with Emmy. She will be delighted by the long name. She is telling everyone right now that her long name is Emerson and her short name is Emmy!
